Signs of a Water Pipe Break

Some pipe breaks are obvious—like a flooded basement or gushing water from a broken pipe. Others can be harder to detect. Here are the key warning signs:
A sudden drop in water pressure

throughout your home or building.

Unexplained water puddles

inside or outside your property.

Unusually high water bills

that indicate excessive water loss.

Water stains on walls or ceilings

suggesting hidden leaks.

Strange noises in your pipes

Strange noises in your pipes such as banging or hissing sounds.

Damp, musty smells

Damp, musty smells that could signal hidden water damage or mold growth.

If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait—a hidden pipe break can lead to major structural issues and mold infestations if left untreated.

Our Water Pipe Break Repair Process

When a water pipe break occurs, we take a systematic approach to ensure thorough repairs and long-term protection for your property.

Step 1

Emergency Shut-Off & Leak Containment

The first step is to stop the flow of water by shutting off the main supply. We also take immediate measures to contain the damage and prevent further flooding.

Step 2

Leak Detection & Damage Assessment

Using advanced moisture meters, infrared cameras, and pressure testing, we identify the exact location of the break—even if it’s hidden behind walls or underground.

Step 3

Pipe Repair or Replacement

Depending on the severity of the break, we will either patch the pipe, replace the damaged section, or install new plumbing lines using high-quality materials that withstand wear and tear.

Step 4

Water Removal & Drying

After fixing the pipe, we extract standing water, dry affected areas, and dehumidify the space to prevent mold and structural damage.

Step 5

Structural Restoration & Repairs

If the break caused damage to walls, floors, ceilings, or foundations, we provide full restoration services, including drywall repair, repainting, and flooring replacement.

Step 6

Preventative Solutions & Maintenance Tips

We don’t just fix the problem—we help you prevent future pipe breaks with insulation, pressure regulation, and maintenance advice to keep your plumbing system running smoothly.

How to Minimize Damage Before Help Arrives

If you suspect a water pipe break, here’s what you can do to limit the damage before our team arrives:

Turn off the main water supply

to stop further flooding.

Shut off electrical power

if water is near outlets or appliances.

Move valuables and furniture

away from the affected area.

Try to contain small leaks

using towels or buckets.

Avoid using plumbing fixtures

until the issue is resolved.

Construction or Excavation Damage

Nearby digging or renovations can accidentally puncture or shift pipes, causing a break.

Taking these quick steps can significantly reduce water damage and make the repair process faster and more effective.

FAQS

FAQs About Water Pipe Breaks

How long does it take to fix a broken water pipe?

It depends on the severity and location of the break. Minor leaks can be repaired within a few hours, while larger pipe replacements or underground repairs may take a day or more.

In most cases, insurance covers sudden pipe breaks but may not cover damage due to neglect or aging pipes. We can help document the damage for your claim.

Temporary fixes, like pipe clamps or tape, might slow the leak, but a permanent repair requires professional expertise to prevent future failures.

  • Insulate pipes in cold weather to prevent freezing.
  • Monitor your water pressure to avoid excessive strain on pipes.
  • Replace old pipes before they fail.
  • Schedule annual plumbing inspections to catch issues early.

A water pipe break can be stressful, but you don’t have to deal with it alone. Whether it’s a small leak or a major pipe failure, we’re here to restore your home or business quickly and efficiently.

Ryan and Rick were very professional, polite and punctual. They walked me through the process as they were working the area of the damage/loss. They were respectful of the “no shoes in the house” custom which I greatly appreciate. Thank you both for your hard work.

Disaster America did a great job on the renovation of a water emergency I had in April… but:Fast forward to late June… The renovation/restoration was finally done: $72 THOUSAND DOLLARS later and 2 bedrooms, hall, bathroom, and 1/4 of the living room dried out and replaced by Disaster America USA.Now… 6 weeks ago (mid July) we started noticing a “buckle” in the floor right inside the front door (about 4 ft from where they deemed was the end of the water damage). 3 weeks ago the buckle had started protruding through the brand new LVP that they put down and it spread down a line toward where they had finished the underfloor remodel. By Thursday it had gotten so bad we couldn’t open the door all the way. Now… when the LVP broke and boards started coming through I called to speak with Jason at Disaster America and he text me and told me to email him the pics and he’d get back to me… I’ve yet to hear back from anyone. I also called and spoke with Sam who was the foreman of the construction company they used and sent him pics of it. He actually said they’d be here Friday to take a look at it and never showed up and I haven’t been able to contact him again either. *Though Sam did tell me he figured the foundation under the old floor had failed and he was sure that was the problem 🙄 Of note- the foundation was repaired less than a year ago and I have the warranty*So on Friday… With some help, I started ripping up the floor to see what the problem was because obviously it was my problem and no one was going to get back with me on this. It wasn’t the foundation… the hardwood subfloor had buckled because the water obviously went further than they thought {as I’d thought, and even asked them to go further when they were ripping it up and they declined and said they KNEW it wasn’t damaged out that far}.So, enjoy some pics of my Labor Day Weekend as this $1.74 disaster continues to cost me THOUSANDS of dollars to fix still, after it was already “fixed” to the tune of $72,000!
